New Year, New Opportunities
New year, new you.
I’m fairly sure I’ve heard that almost every year for as long as I can remember. It seems that marketers really utilize this phrase to try and make you feel like whatever product they are offering is the solution to all of your problems. It would be nice if they would change this phrase to something like, “new year, new opportunities”. I like that a lot more.
Now, I’m fully aware of the fact that I need to eat a little better and workout a little more frequently than once every two weeks. However, with the typical phrase of new year, new you it implies that you must reinvent yourself or do something to drastically alter your life. Why not focus on opportunities to just better your life, your body, and your dreams? Each day greets you with the opportunity to make a different choice than you did the day before, try and make a choice that will change the patterns in your life you don’t love!
Anyone who knows me is fully aware of my love (obsession) of dark chocolate, brownies, and ice cream. The problem for me has been that I allow myself to satisfy my cravings of these sugary treats on a daily basis. Earlier this week I was offered a cookie that someone did not want and I took it without giving it much thought. After I sat down with my cookie and napkin in hand I paused and actually looked at the cookie. I wasn’t hungry, so why did I accept it in the first place? I realized, in that moment, I actually did not have a craving for any sugar or chocolate (I know I was as shocked as you are!!!!). Then I did something I never thought I would do, I actually set the cookie on the table beside me and did not eat it and later ended up putting it in a Ziploc bag. The next morning rolled around and I ate half of the cookie, but I focused on what I was craving through the rest of the day and surprisingly enough I did not have any sugar cravings! So, listening to what my body was saying, I did not eat any sweets. Here it is now Wednesday and I still do not have any cravings for sugar. It is really shocking to me how taking that opportunity to pause and really think has impacted my week.
I’m going to continue to take the opportunity to contemplate what my body is craving for fuel and what I eat. I want to take advantage of the opportunities when they arise to make smarter choices about food. Is there something you’re struggling with in regard to your diet? Maybe you’re struggling with the word diet in general? Take this opportunity to re-think the word! Don’t view the word as a negative thing with limitations and restrictions, instead think of it as what the word is, the types of food a person or creature habitually eats. Take the opportunity to make one change today. We all struggle with making changes and I think that is because we have this end goal in mind and we want to make all the changes at once to get the end result as soon as possible. The problem with this approach is we typically make too many drastic changes that we are not willing to maintain long term. So I challenge you, take one thing in your life and take the opportunity to really think about everything about that one thing. Ask yourself these few questions:
- Is this something that makes you happy?
- What about it makes you happy?
- What about it makes you unhappy?
- Is there something you wish you would do instead of that thing?
- What are the steps you need to take to make a change or to maintain?
Once you have answered these questions look at the steps you came up with to either make a change or to maintain and start with your first step. For three weeks, make the effort to implement that change on a daily basis and soon it will just become second nature. On the fourth week, start implementing what you identified as your second step. Continue this process until you have achieved the change you wanted and it has become a new habit.
Make New Year, New Opportunity your new mantra!
Let me know in the comments below on what opportunity you are going to take in the coming weeks. I will give you another update on my sugary changes in a few weeks!
